These dishcloths are made in Sweden to create a top quality, authentic product. Traditional cloths and sponges are made from plastics and cannot be recycled or composted. Millions of microplastics from cloths have also found their ways into oceans and into the stomachs of our wildlife. What are Swedish dishcloths? Invented in 1949 by Swedish engineer Curt Lindqvist, Swedish dishcloths are a cloth/sponge hybrid created from natural wood fibre and cotton, usually around the size of a book. These cloths can absorb up to 15 times their own weight, clean up food and drink spills like a charm, and don’t leave streaks behind on windows or appliances. Once the cloth is dirty, you can easily throw it into your dishwasher or washing machine and it is like new again. Why make the swap? Most common household sponges and cloths usually only last a couple of weeks before they’re thrown away, contributing to plastic pollution for hundreds of years before breaking down into microplastics. They are also commonly made with nasty chemicals such as petroleum, bleach, and sulphates. What is FSC® 100% Certified Cellulose? FSC® is a globally recognised certification scheme. This means that the wood fibre used in this product is certified against the principles and criteria of the Forest Stewardship Council®, including values such as maintaining the forest’s ecosystem, upholding indigenous people’s rights of land ownership, and a commitment to maintain or enhance the forests used. Pair this dishcloth with our organic cotton hand towels for a stylish kitchen look. Many of us don’t realise our dishcloths are made out of microfibres, which are a kind of plastic. Every time you wash this synthetic fabric, millions of microfibres are released into the waters, these fibres are too small to be filtered out by waste treatment plants, so they end up in our waterways and oceans, where they wreak havoc on marine animal health and our environment. These plastics make their way into the bellies of marine animals, and people have found plastics within the fish on their plates! Once you are done with your dishcloth, cut it into strips and place it into your compost bin, it will then fully biodegrade back into our earth. Are cotton dishcloths more eco friendly? Cotton dishcloths are more eco friendly than a sponge or synthetic cloth as they are biodegradable and naturally antimicrobial. They are just like a microfibre dishcloth but without the microplastics. How to wash cotton dishcloths Rinse off your dishcloth first to avoid getting build up in your washing machine, then throw them in the washing machine on a hot wash. You can put your dishcloths into the tumble dryer but avoid fabric softer as it will reduce their absorbency. If your cloth has a smell, soak them in warm water with vinegar before you wash them.
